DIPLOMA IN DRAMATHERAPY

Sesame - Δίπλωμα δραματοθεραπείας

ΑΝΑΛΥΤΙΚΟ ΠΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΑ  2023-2027

Περιεχόμενα

ABOUT THE TRAINING COURSE

The Diploma in Dramatherapy at Epineio is based on the Sesame approach to Drama and Movement Therapy, which includes the enactment of myth and story, the herapeutic use of Rudolf Laban’s analysis of movement, Billy Lindkvist work with movement with touch and sound and Peter Slade’s Child Drama theory. The central theoretical frame is analytical psychology and the work of Carl Jung.

Through this part-time training, you will:

  • gain the theoretical and experiential knowledge, as well as the practical experience, imperative to become a professional dramatherapist;
  • learn how to practice dramatherapy under the principles of the Sesame approach to drama and movement therapy;
  • study dramatherapy without being obliged to reside in Thessaloniki, Greece;
  • be able to undertake the internships in your country of residence, with the support of on-line supervision.

OUR APPROACH

Dramatherapy uses drama to promote creativity, imagination, knowledge, inner change and evolution. In a session, therapist and client elaborate on the metaphors and symbols through drama, movement, touch and storytelling. Through dramatherapy, one can work either individually or in a group.

Jung asserts that individuation is the psyche’s lifelong opus to integrate its conscious and unconscious elements, into a well-functioning whole. Following that belief, within the ritualist structure of a Dramatherapy session, the participant embodies different types of roles, explores patterns of behaviour and develops functional ways of encountering life’s contradictions. Through role-playing, and the engagement with different forms and modes of movement, participants are allowed to experiment with alternative ways of behaving and dealing with situations in their lives. Within the safety provided by the use of the arts, in a non-confrontational psychotherapeutic frame, based on the knowledge that difficulties can be revealed through symbols and metaphors, the individual can express emotions and thoughts, in order to develop confidence, deepen self-knowledge and facilitate communication with others.

INTRODUCTION TO THE SCHEDULE

This dramatherapy training course is four years part-time, the lectures are theoretical and experiential and cover the fundamental principles of Drama and Movement Therapy; Myth, Drama, Laban and Movement with Touch and Sound. You will also attend modules studying rituals and theatrical acts in dramatherapy, analytical and evolutionary psychology, psychopathology, performance in dramatherapy.

It is a hybrid learning programme delivered partially in-person and online, addressing the need for a dramatherapy training that will allow trainees to study without having to reside in Thessaloniki. The theoretical lectures will take place online, while the experiential workshops in-person at Epineio. You will have to attend the compulsory workshops three times a year, in October, February and June, for four days each visit (Thursday to Sunday). Each five-days short course will comprise one or more modules.

At the beginning of the third year, you will start placements facilitating individual and group dramatherapy sessions, under the guidance of certified supervisors. You will complete your training with a 10.000 words diploma thesis, on a subject that you will choose with the support of your thesis supervisor.

The placements can be undertaken in therapeutic or educational settings in your country of residence. To complete the programme, you will have to facilitate 300 hours of one-to-one and group dramatherapy sessions. Group and individual supervision during the placements will be provided by EPINEIO, performed by supervisors accredited by the NHS (National Health Service, UK) and will be mainly conducted online.

PLACEMENTS AND SUPERVISION

Placements are an essential part of the training. It provides the opportunity to experience the role of dramatherapist, under the safety, guidance and support of a qualified supervisor. That 3 way you will be able to apply knowledge to practice, be better equipped and feel more confident when you start practicing the dramatherapy profession after you graduate.

In the first semester of your third year of training, you will begin your placements. You have to undertake three different placements in health, social service or educational contexts, during which you will have to facilitate 300 hours of group and individual dramatherapy sessions with adults and adolescents with mental health problems, learning disabilities and on the autistic spectrum, elderly clients with dementia, children with challenging behaviour.

The placements’ institutions/organizations can be at your place of residence and you will be responsible for arranging them, with the support of Epineio. Throughout this time, you will work alongside individual and group supervision (150 hours). Some of the supervision sessions will be held online.

THERAPY REQUIREMENTS

In this training, we strongly support the need for a therapist to have a deeper understanding of him/herself to be able to guide others through such a journey. Following this view, you are expected to undertake at least 250 sessions of personal therapy during your training, 180 hours of which will be individual therapy and the remaining 70 group therapy.

Individual psychotherapy

  • The individual psychotherapy will be with a therapist of your choice. It is advised however, if possible, that you begin with a Jungian analyst.
  • The individual therapy will support you during the training and provide a space where you will be able to work with the personal issues that could arise during that period.

Group therapy

During the second year of your studies, you will need to participate in a psychotherapeutic group.

  • You are advised to participate in a dramatherapy group during your training. However, if you cannot find one in your area of residence, you can choose a dance therapy or art therapy group.
  • This space will allow you to work creatively through your processes in an experiential group.

Progress group

In the first year, you are required to participate uninterruptedly in a process group with your fellow students, which will take place online every two weeks. In this space, you will have the opportunity to explore the dynamics shaped within a group but also work through personal issues that arise from your participation in this training.

Only the sessions of therapy you participated in whilst you are a trainee of the programme are considered to complete this requirement.

You are expected to arrange both individual and group therapeutic processes yourself and you are responsible for paying them.

At the beginning of the training, you will be given two forms, one for the individual and one for group therapy. You will have to return both at the end of therapies, completed by your therapists, where the number of sessions you attended will have to be stated.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

Participation in the training programme is via a Bachelor's degree in human sciences, art therapies or a related discipline and at least two years of voluntary or paid work experience with clients with specific needs. If you do not have a first degree (or equivalent), but have at least five years of professional experience working with clients with specific needs, in educational or care settings, you will be also considered.

With your application, you will be asked to submit a short (500 words) account of the reasons why you would like to participate in the programme and discuss one aspect of the Sesame approach to drama and movement therapy that you find interesting.

Theoretical framework of Sesame

This module will offer a thorough understanding of the Sesame approach, its history and theoretical background. It will introduce you to the theories of key practitioners and their contribution to the development of art psychotherapies.

Myth

In this module, you will experientially explore the world of archetypes and symbols of myths, stories and fairy tales. This process is performed within the specific structure of a Sesame session, consisting of the phases: Warm-up, Bridge in, Main event, Bridge out and Grounding. The theoretical basis that governs this mode of work, is none other than the work of Jung and later analysts who commented on and developed his work like Hillman, Pedraza, Von Franz and the mythologist Joseph Campbell.

Drama

In this module, you will engage in dramatical processes and play, with a therapeutic aim. You will be introduced to various forms, techniques and theatre schools, along with Peter Slade’s method, where personal and projective play takes on a therapeutic role. You will focus on clinical Dramatherapy with children and adolescents, life stages in which dramatherapy is especially effective. This module provides a balanced combination of theory and experiential knowledge. You will be trained in different dramatherapeutic techniques, which can be specifically used with children and adolescents. Furthermore, you will come into contact with Erickson, Winnicott and Slade’s theories and with some dramatherapists’ theories like Jennings, Cattanach, Leigh that have been developed for creative work within corresponding clinical settings.

Laban

In this module, you will study the theory of the analysis of movement and the relationship between movement and dramatherapy. You will be taught the basic principles of Laban’s theory, its philosophy and its application to therapy and explore the importance of the liaison between soul and body and the correlations between movement and Analytical psychology. This module combines the experiential and the theoretical approach to Laban’s kinesiological principles and their therapeutic application.

Movement with touch and sound

Movement with touch and sound was invented and developed by Marian Lindkvist, founder of Sesame, in the 1970s. Lindkvist, after 10 years of experience in psychiatric hospitals and special centers for children with learning disabilities and autism, has created MWTS, as a way of communication and treatment for people who do not have the ability to speak or their speech is significantly limited.

Focusing on the primal communication between mother and infant, based on body contact and interaction, Lindkvist cultivated this non-verbal therapeutic method which aims at reconstructing first experiences, promoting healthy bodily and emotional expression, developing social skills and building confidence.

This module is mainly experiential. You will learn the techniques of the method, that are reinforced and analysed according to Lindqvist's theory but also to developmental and Jung’s analytical psychology.

Dramatherapy in practice

In this module, you will work with several topics of dramatherapy in its practical application, such as the code of dramatherapy ethics, contract with clients, the organization of the therapeutic framework. You will also analyze issues of communication with the workplace, assessment of the clients and how to set up a group. You will plan a drama and movement therapy session for each basic module (Myth, Drama, Laban and Movement with Touch and Sound) and present it to the tutor and group. The main objective of this module is to prepare you for the dramatherapy practice, both on a theoretical and on a practical level.

Performance in dramatherapy

The dramatherapist during a session has an active role in the dramatherapeutic activities. Sometimes he or she plays the role of a director or coordinator, while others exist in the therapeutic area as an observer/viewer. During this module, you will have the opportunity to play all these roles. In the first part, you will be taught the theories of the “role”, according to Robert Landy and David Read Johnson. In the second part, you will take on the role of the director working with the members of their class, directing a short theatrical event. The subject is of your choice and maybe a poem, a part of a text, your writing or not.

Assessment

Type of task:

  • Essay (weight within the unit: 100%)
  • Theatrical event (weight within the unit: Pass/Fail)

Assessment criteria
